The next time I experience a Tuesday at 3:31 pm…I will be in KOREA! According to my travel plans, at 3:30 next Tuesday I will be landing at the Seoul airport. My fellow missionaries also heading to the Daejeon Mission and I will leave the MTC on Monday at 3:00 am. That’s right, I will be missing out on 36 hours of life, but I think it’s a fair trade to be able to go to Korea and serve the wonderful people there. So from now on all your snail mail to me will be more expensive and will take way longer, but trust me, it’ll still be worth it!

Here at the MTC and in the mission field, a way to classify mission areas and classes is by labeling them “Districts.” The similarity between this and the popular Hunger Games novels and movies has not gone unnoticed. (more…)

Saturday, at the Teaching Resource Center (TRC), my companion and I taught our second forty minute lesson to a native Korean (who isn’t our teacher). Forty minutes in Struggle-in-the-Language Land can be intimidating, especially because our whole lesson was on the power of prayer and how Heavenly Father can give us revelation and guidance when we pray. We were afraid we wouldn’t have enough to talk about. As we prepared our questions and scriptures, we hoped that we were preparing enough to edify and lift her up and encourage her in her efforts to be closer to Christ. But, how can you really know when we’ve never met this person before? (more…)

This week I had the overly exciting blessing of seeing a close family friend who now teaches Russian here at the MTC. At the end of our short conversation he reached out his hand to shake mine (in typical Mormon missionary fashion) and it was weird to me. (more…)

Sometimes I forget that life goes on outside the MTC. In my hometown, kids are already back at school and at my alma mater Butler University it is Welcome Week, the best time of the year! Seriously, there’s nothing better than Welcome Week, and because the Lord loves me and knew how much I’d be missing out on the fun, he sent me…or really all of us Koreans…a nice big batch of 30 new missionaries to welcome on Wednesday! It’s August! And I have been here at the MTC for almost seven weeks…I think. The weeks are starting to blur together and they go by so fast that I hardly notice the weeks going by.

[The last post, Anna started a story about things being lost in translation. The first paragraph is to refresh your memories, the rest is the continuation of the story.]
Before I close, I want to share a funny lost-in-translation story that I experienced on Sunday. Ever since the Koreans got here, they, the sisters and the elders, have told me that I am beautiful. Ok, so I knew that Asians think white skin is beautiful, no big deal, no reason to let that go to my head. On Sunday, during our temple walk, I was taking a picture with one of the elders and when he looked at the picture on his camera he said, “Oh, you have small head!” Ah, rude! So I told him maybe he just has a big head and he roared with laughter!! I found out that a small head is beautiful in Korean!

This week went by the fastest of any of my weeks at the MTC thus far. Let me finish telling you about Sundays, and then I will tell you why my heart grew this week.

I thought you might all like to know what it is that I do with my days! I’ll start with Wednesday because that is the day of the week that I got here and in my mind that is when an MTC week begins! (more…)
